This goes right along with Bill Treasurer’s “Being a good leader should never require being a bad person.”

Work on being a giver, especially now, but make sure you also take time for yourself. You can give while still leaving time for your own good. Otherish givers are far more successful than strictly selfless givers and don’t burn out doing it.

Bad Behavior:

It’s critical for leaders to foster a culture where bad behavior can’t persist. You won’t witness it every time. You need a culture where people are clear on what is inappropriate, take personal responsibility for stopping it, and are celebrated for it.

This is a great week (Christmas to New Years) to reflect on 2019 (and the last decade) and look ahead to 2020. Reflection is a big part of self-awareness, and self-awareness is the gateway to self-management. Will you take the time to reflect this week?

I love this quote from HBO’s “Chernobyl” miniseries. For leaders, it’s important to be reminded that lies don’t have to be overt. They also can take the form of half-truths, omissions, obscuring conclusions, biasing evidence, and so forth. Does your culture really promote transparency? If not, the debt will eventually come due.

Creating safety, where people can speak their mind and ask questions, is a critical responsibility of leadership. Without it, ideas don’t get expressed, people don’t feel valued or heard, and problems don’t get surfaced and dealt with.

Leaders have to be watchful of and diligent in eliminating destructive behaviors on their teams. Those issues don’t heal themselves, and they have an out-sized negative impact on the team. Nip them in the bud, or pay a heavy price later.

Leaders need to find ways to promote the flow of information, including speaking last and making it safe.

It’s starts with a culture that values and rewards working together instead of the individual.

Values are critically important to create boundaries for your vision, but we can’t ignore culture and the traits that define it, pretending that our values do that.

Leaders can get lost trying to “fix” or “develop” people. Work on the environment, not the fixing or growing. Or put another way, “Stay in your lane, bro.”

We say we’ll change things once we have the authority to do it, but there will always be another boss to impress and another boat to not rock. Things will change when one leader has the courage to do it in spite of the risks. Don’t wait for a future position or authority. Be that leader today. – Click to Tweet

There are a number of factors that contribute to filling a person’s TRUST bucket. A history of promises kept, the credibility gained through a proven track record, and a positive reputation are all strong contributors. But among the things that build trust, honesty is premier. You trust people who are honest with you. – From “Courage Goes to Work” by Bill Treasurer

“You don’t create memories by having sensational slides, clever one liners or startling statistics. You create memories by being all in, being vulnerable, being authentic and taking risks. What’s the greatest risk you’ve ever taken during one of your presentations?” – Jim Smith Jr. International

“Character does matter in leadership. It matters a lot. In fact character is what makes leadership possible. People simply cannot respect or trust those who lack character and if they do not respect a man they will not follow.” – John MacArthur

The first law of leadership is, “It’s not about you.” It’s about those being led. Your job is to elevate people’s standards, broaden their capabilities and help them add more value. You can’t be successful unless they are. The daily habit you should adopt is to ask the two questions Ben Franklin used to bookend each day. Morning: “What good shall I do today?” Night: “What good have I done today?” – Bill Treasurer, Giant Leap Consulting
